The Old Kerk

The Old Kerk (Old Church) is Perrenland’s incarnation of the Old Faith, the worship of the Flan gods that have shepherded the Flan people for millennia. It has grown to become the dominant religion in Perrenese. It is a traditional body of worship based upon the Flan gods of Beory, Allitur, Pelor, Rao, Berei, Zodal, Obad-Hai, and Vathris, as well as the new demi-goddess Mayaheine. Acknowledgment is also given to Nerull, as an unavoidable part of the Flan history. These gods form the general framework of religion in Perrenland for the Clans and act as the “nation binder”. Most of the human dominated clans, with the exception of the Roodbergs and Morganroods, have almost universal membership of the Old Kerk. The benign nature of the Old Kerk has seen its followers spread to other races and cultures both within and beyond the borders of Perrenland, and Juistmenn can be found amongst the folk of many lands and cultures.

The Juistmenn of the Old Kerk are the basic members, while the Sacraal Trekkers are initiates. The Old Kerk itself is divided into the Shool, the Grove, and the Voice. The Shool of the Old Kerk tend the shrines and the Great Temples, and minister to the religious needs of worshippers. The Grove of the Old Kerk tend to areas of untamed wilderness called Old Seed areas, ensuring that the natural order is not destroyed by over-use or over-settlement of the land. The Voice of the Old Kerk are lorekeepers, dispute-settlers, and joybringers who remind people of what they have in common and of the good things in life.

Juistmenn

The Juistmenn (True Believers) are the basic members of the Old Kerk and entry is open to all who follow the Old Faith and have a connection to Perrenland. They are, at their most simple level, your average worshipper, knowing and respecting the prayers and holy days. All Juistmenn consider themselves members of a fraternity and will strive to assist fellow members wherever possible.

Sacraal Trekkers

Tending the Great Temples, Groves and Colleges are a group of dedicated men and women of many races. They come from many walks of life in answer to a calling few can describe but all eventually embrace. They pay homage to all the gods of the Old Kerk and tend the shrines, colleges and seed areas of the Old Kerk. These are the Sacraal Trekkers, those who are on a sacred journey in their life. Some, after serving their first year as a Sacraal Trekker, become fully consecrated members of the Shool, Voice or Grove.

Sacraal Trekkers are lay preachers and helpers of the Old Kerk’s three priesthoods and are dedicated to the preservation of the Old Kerk. They attend to the worship of the Flan gods in many different and diverse ways. Some take to a life of travelling far and wide to assist communities who follow the Old Way and Old Kerk.

The Grove

Members of the Grove do not necessarily follow a specific deity of the Old Kerk (although many do), as they see the balance manifested by worshipping them all. Their primary focus is the preservation of the earth that was gifted by Beory the Oerth mother in the beginning of time. The Grove is very active in Perrenland, advising and assisting farmers and herdsmen to work the land without ruining it for future generations. Communities that work with the Grove will find their crops and animals protected, communities who do not will quickly discover pestilence and famine. Sacred areas of the grove, the “Old Seed” and “New Seed” areas are places where non-grove members are generally not welcome without permission. These are generally marked with standing stones and other markers.

The Voice

The Voice tends to culture and civilisation and how it fits into the great scheme. Members of the Voice are often not seen for what they are, priests of the Old Kerk. The fact that they tend to refer to themselves as Bards (often even when they are technically not) does little to dispel this illusion.

They are responsible for lifting the spirits of the folk in times of trouble or reminding them to be charitable in times of plenty. They are the voiced conscience of the people and the keepers of their memories and collective wisdom.

Voice members can demand of any Perrenland NPC the right to the first and last statement in an argument and they have the power to censure any Perrender.

The School

The Shool are the Old Kerk’s divine priesthood, composed of divine spell casters who dedicate themselves to a particular shrine of the Old Kerk. The Shool as a group, although involved in more heavenly matters than the Sacraal Trekkers, still focus their attention upon the ordinary day-to-day affairs of tending to the faithful. They meet to discuss religious law, matters that affect the church as a whole, and to settle matters of religious dispute between clerics and worshippers in matters not covered by Perren’s Law. They also run hospitals, schools, and orphanages, or serve in the Auszug or Pax Mercuri. The Shool is one aspect of the trinity of the Old Kerk, being the aspect concerned with the divine. They tend to be more focused upon maintaining good than law.
